Joyce Du’s interest towards fashion began to develop when she first put on her spinal brace when she was fourteen. Through exploring the restraint relationship between clothes and body, she embraced the beautiful shapes and movements that a body can naturally create. Du believes that fashion, an artistic form of expression for an individual, aims to bring out inspirational messages that motivate the world through visual storytelling. Without the use of traditional pattern making, Du defines her aesthetic using innovative fabrics and materials to drape structural and modern silhouettes, creating a futuristic yet sophisticated image for her women.
Graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in fashion design from Parsons School of Design in New York in 2015, Joyce Du |
was subsequently honored as the 67th Parsons Benefit Runway Show finalist and semi-finalist of Womenswear Designer of the Year in the same year. During her stay in New York, Du gained experiences while working in the design teams in Rag & Bone and 3.1 Phillip Lim.
Joyce Du took part in a fashion design study abroad programme in Central Saint Martins London in 2013, which reinforced her interest and knowledge in fashion. She also spent a few years time in a multi-ethnic city—Toronto before New York. Although Du is a Canadian, she is born and raised in an “East meets West” international city—Hong Kong, Du is surrounded by both western and oriental cultures since she was small, creating a dual identity for her. These various experiences of travels, art, culture, and architecture draw inspiration and build an international vision for her as an individual designer. |
